Fabricators wanting to form sheet materials can choose from a variety of techniques. Pressing into a mold is a proven method for complex 3D products. This technique is well-suited to larger series because the costs of the mold, which are often high, must be spread over large quantities to keep the price reasonable.
For open products with a high length/diameter ratio, deep drawing is an excellent option. Today this technique can also be used for drastic changes in thickness and shape. A technique that is especially popular for hollow products is hydro-forming. In extreme cases, exotic techniques such as explosive forming are sometimes used. With reference to two-dimensional forming of sheet metal, a choice must be made between bending by means of folding on the one hand and pressing on the other.
